Making a Difference: March 2018 highlights

April 12, 2018  //  FOUND IN: Our Employees,

Employees across Michigan Medicine continue to make a difference and inspire colleagues through their hard work and dedication. Recognizing the contributions employees make to the organization helps the team to become more motivated, drives better teamwork and gives each individual a sense that they are an integral part of achieving organizational goals.

Here are just a few examples of how faculty and staff helped Michigan Medicine provide exceptional care and service last month:

Peer recognition

Lisa Hackney, entrance attendant, Entrance Services

Lisa is an amazing ambassador for the Frankel Cardiovascular Center and Michigan Medicine as a whole. I have witnessed her going to extraordinary lengths to help patients and their families enter the building safely and comfortably. Her kindness and warm personality really set the tone for an individual’s entire visit. Lisa is truly the key to the whole patient experience. On behalf of myself and my patients, I want Lisa and everyone to know how much I appreciate her. Thank you!

Olivia Yost, M.D., house officer, family medicine

I just wanted to recognize Olivia for providing outstanding care to a patient and his wife who had difficulty coming to terms with her husband’s diagnosis. She showed compassion and patience, while providing strength during a very difficult time. She repeatedly checked in on the two of them and went above and beyond her role as his physician. I could tell how much she was appreciated.

Trish Harris, phlebotomist, pathology

Trish, your kindness and patience when working with anxious children and families makes the experience of being poked much more tolerable. Recently, I saw you go above and beyond to create a trusting environment before approaching an extremely frightened child for her lab draw. The parents and nurse who were present were extremely impressed by your ability to diffuse her anxiety. Thank you for your kindness and efforts to make one child’s day go a little bit better!

Scott Klee, key and ID associate, Security Services

Scott, you make every encounter a fantastic experience. Your kindness and friendly demeanor brighten up my day. I look forward to bringing new staff to the ID and key service area to meet you. It’s a great way for new staff to meet a good representative of who we are at Michigan Medicine. Your positivity and excellent service do not go unnoticed. Thank you for always lifting everyone’s spirits!

Molly Kofflin, activity therapist, Child & Family Life

I would like to recognize Molly for the exceptional care she provides to patients and families. I had the privilege to collaborate with Molly during a bereavement with a long-term patient. The way that she is able to connect with patients and their families is beautiful to witness, as she is able to create a safe environment for them to feel comfortable in expressing their emotions and grief. Molly was incredibly attentive to the family’s needs, going above and beyond to make sure they had everything they needed. Her thoughtful interventions and interactions continue to make a difference and inspire others to connect in meaningful ways. Thank you, Molly.

John Romstadt, clinical nurse, 5D surgical ICU

John, you are always caring for your patients and making yourself available to assist during therapy sessions to ensure your patient’s safety and stability. Your communication with patients and their family members is recognized from a distance — and shows itself in many small gestures. Recently, we witnessed you working hard to set up technology for a patient and family to ensure they were able to Skype into a family event. You go beyond the call of duty and we are grateful to have you as part of this interdisciplinary team!

Pedro Coracides, project manager, Office of Patient Experience

Pedro has been such a great addition to the patient experience team, jumping in to manage nearly 90 HOPE Ambassador volunteers, meet with departments to better serve their needs and support a number of other initiatives. It’s hard to pinpoint one particular date of great service, but he recently went out of his way to provide support to a family facing an end-of-life situation after seeing a distressed family member in the elevator. He made sure they had access to all the information and resources available to families, and checked in regularly to see how he could be of service, even when it didn’t fall within the regular duties of his role. We are so lucky to have him!

Patient to staff

Rosalyn Maben-Feaster, M.D., Ob/gyn

I would like to recognize Dr. Maben-Feaster due to her incredible ability to provide a warm and welcoming environment. She is always taking the time to truly listen to her patients’ concerns and routinely goes above and beyond what is expected to ensure that patients understand what is going on each step of the way. I am so grateful to have found such a compassionate and caring physician during such an important phase of my life. Thank you, Dr. Maben-Feaster!
