Reminder: Policies during flu season
Flu is increasing in the community as Michigan Medicine is seeing an increase in cases in the inpatient, emergency department and ambulatory settings.
To help keep patients, families and colleagues safe, now is the perfect time to review and remind yourself of important information when it comes to the flu.
Don’t work when ill
If you start to feel ill while at work, put on a mask and try to leave as soon as possible. Employees with a fever, an upper respiratory infection or influenza-like illness with or without fever may not work and must stay home until fever free (without medication) AND muscle aches, chills and headache symptoms have been resolved for at least 24 hours without the use of medication.
Staff with such symptoms also should not provide care to patients in protective precautions for seven days from symptom onset or until resolution of symptoms, whichever is longer.
If you have a high-risk exposure to a patient with the flu (ie. staff who were directly coughed in the face or who were engaging in aerosol-generating procedures such as intubation, extubation, sputum induction, bronchoscopy, CPR and open-system suctioning on an influenza patient with no mask), contact Occupational Health Services at 734-764-8021 for follow up and possible antiviral prophylaxis as soon as possible after exposure.
Staff with high risk exposures should be evaluated for antiviral prophylaxis regardless of whether or not they have had the influenza vaccine.
Proper way to wear a mask
Please be reminded to cover both your mouth and nose when wearing a mask, as shown below:
Healthy visitor policy
Children ages 11 and under are not permitted to visit patients in droplet precautions. Visitors with muscle aches, chills and headache symptoms are also not permitted. Ill family members that cannot delay their visit must wear a mask while in the academic medical center.
Infection Prevention will continue to closely monitor the flu season and may make additional recommendations as needed. Thank you for your cooperation!
