Learn to write understandable and actionable patient education materials

All Michigan Medicine clinicians are invited to participate in the class “Beyond Readability Formulas: Writing Clear and Effective Patient-Centered Educational Materials.”  The class will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 30  between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at 2101 Commonwealth Suite 2, Room 1462.

Over-reliance on readability formulas and readability scores is a common mistake health care professionals make when writing materials for patients. This class will focus on proven principles and guidelines of writing in plain language.

Through the use of real life examples, participants will learn to recognize elements that hinder understanding, and what language, layout, formatting and design methodologies aid learners at all levels of health literacy comprehend and retain information about their health.

The instructor will be Ruti Volk, M.S.I., AHIP, patient education and health literacy program lead.
