Making a Difference: November 2017 highlights
Employees across Michigan Medicine continue to make a difference through their hard work and dedication. Recognizing the contributions employees make to the organization helps the team to become more motivated, drives better teamwork and gives each individual a sense that they are an integral part of achieving organizational goals.
Here are just a few examples of how faculty and staff helped Michigan Medicine provide exceptional care and service last month:
Mary Sushynski, registered nurse, 8W
On numerous occasions, Mary has exemplified excellent nursing care not only to the patients in the NICU but to their families, as well. One specific instance was the recent care she provided to a patient from pediatric surgery. This patient had a long ICU stay with multiple operations and remained very sick. Mary was there, every day, providing excellent care. On the specific day that staff had a difficult discussion with the family, Mary was there consoling the family and providing the best nursing care the team has ever seen. She was caring, thoughtful, calm, supportive and empathetic. Her influence both on the patient and team will be something we will always remember. Thank you, Mary!
Raven Webster, certified child life specialist, Child & Family Life
Raven was our saving grace when a young patient came into the ER. The patient had never been to the ER before, never had a blood draw and never had an IV. She needed all of that in a hurry. Raven was so calming and helped her work through her fears. After we were settled a bit more, she asked the patient just a few questions to learn about some of her interests, then put together an amazing craft/comfort kit for her to take to the PICU. Thanks so much Raven. I don’t know what we would have done without you that afternoon.
Jodie Cox, medical assistant specialist, otolaryngology
Jodie stopped what she was doing and immediately went to the pharmacy when one of our doctors was out of a specific item. The patient needed the medication promptly and I had to remain in the clinic to assist. Jodie was not working with me, but quickly volunteered to get this medication. I appreciate her teamwork and willingness to help. She is such a great person to work with and I value her aid greatly! Thanks, Jodie!
Edward Golatka, unit custodian, Environmental Services
Eddie always keeps our unit clean and orderly, while often going above and beyond. For example, we recently had a patient in our infusion area beyond our normal closing time. The room needed a lot of attention and Eddie was incredibly pleasant, assuring us he would handle cleaning up the area. The next morning the room sparkled and shined. We are so lucky to be able to count on you, Eddie!
Jennifer Zacur, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology
It has been an absolute honor to work alongside Dr. Zacur. From day one, her passion for education has been clear. She excitedly approaches every day with the goal of sharing her boundless knowledge with residents and patients. She has developed a welcoming learning environment that encourages and stimulates inquiry. Words cannot do justice for how lucky I feel to have to have worked with you, Dr. Zacur!
Family to staff
Stanley Chetcuti, M.D., professor of internal medicine
Dr. Chetcuti, you made a difference for not only my grandfather (your patient), but his whole family. Your attentiveness and commitment to his care built a level of trust that is not always easy to gain. It was wonderful to see you show up to his room with your entire cardiac team to wheel him yourself to the cath lab — a move that I know helped ease the nerves of my family. Thank you, Dr. Chetcuti, for your patience, expertise and kindness!
Patient to staff
Cheryl Czajkowski, registered nurse, 9E/W
Cheryl, thank you for going above and beyond during some difficult moments before I gave birth to my son. You kept my husband and I calm and encouraged the entire time. How you went out of your way to make sure we were OK and that we would get excellent nursing care speaks volumes to your commitment to patients. We will never forget your kindness and generosity. Thank you so much!
Marija Mikas, physical therapist, PM&R MedRehab
Marija, you are amazing! I am not one to step down from a challenge and for 24 physical therapy sessions, you encouraged me and pushed me to my limits with professionalism, humor and compassion. You were always encouraging me to go outside of my comfort zone and do a little more. Now, thanks to your high standards and dedication, my life is just about back to normal. I came to my first appointment in a wheelchair and now I’m walking independently. Thank you!
Patient to department
Patient Food & Nutrition Services
During my recent stay, the food, attendants and every detail were top-notch each day. I was served some of the best food ever — food that was professionally prepared for each patient. To have people take such great pride in preparing meals makes all the difference to a patient during a hospital stay. Thank you for your professionalism in carrying out your vocation with a lot of TLC. I will never forget you.
