Reminder: Activate closed captioning on televisions in public areas

Please be advised that the City of Ann Arbor now requires closed captioning to be activated on all televisions located in public areas. The new policy aims to improve the health, safety and welfare of city residents and visitors.

This means that closed captioning, if available, must be activated on any television in a public area while the television is in use. Public areas include lobby areas, waiting rooms, outpatient clinics and other medical offices.

Employees should also activate the closed captioning feature on televisions located in private patient rooms when patients who are deaf or hard of hearing request it.

The ordinance does not require the replacement of televisions that are incapable of displaying close captioning, nor does it require that televisions be turned on.

Michigan Medicine supports the activation of closed captioning on all televisions located in public areas within all of the organization’s health clinics, not just those located within Ann Arbor city limits.
