It’s Corporate Compliance Week! Want the scoop? Do not snoop!

If you’ve been given access to the organization’s electronic medical record system, it’s because you need that access to perform your job-related functions. There are exceptions (for example, your own record, that of your minor child under the age of 10, and family and friends with the proper authorization). However, curiosity is never a reason to access another person’s record, even if that person is someone you know or work with or is a well-known celebrity, politician or athlete.

Michigan Medicine workforce members must report suspected privacy violations, including inappropriate access to the EMR. If you are aware of someone inappropriately accessing patient records, contact the Compliance Office at 734-615-4400 or the Compliance Hotline at 1-866-990-0111. For more information see Accessing Electronic Medical Records on the compliance website.

Remember — curiosity is never an acceptable reason to enter the EMR.
