Upcoming career fair offers ‘endless opportunities’
Are you or someone you know looking to expand or begin a career as a nurse, advanced practice nurse or physician assistant? Great news! The Michigan Medicine fall 2017 career fair will be held on Sunday, Oct. 22 at the Jack Roth Stadium Club at Michigan Stadium.
The fair will be an incredible opportunity to meet with hiring managers from departments across the organization, and learn about available positions and exciting new career paths.
That’s what happened to Morgan Petrangelo, who began working at Michigan Medicine after the most recent career fair. Morgan is now a nurse on 8D.
Check out her story:
Why did you choose nursing as a career path?
MP: My family consists of people who work in business, engineering and law, so I went out on a limb by choosing nursing as a career. In high school, I became very interested in the science and anatomy of the human body and was eager to learn more about it. With shadowing experiences at my local hospital, I was able to see the impact of direct patient care and the relationships you build with your patients. I wanted to make a difference in others’ lives the way nurses do every day.
What was your experience like at the recent Michigan Medicine recruiting fair?
MP: Before arriving, I was a little nervous, but the atmosphere turned out to be more than welcoming. All managers, supervisors and nurses I came into contact with were eager to talk with me and find out what my interests were and what goals I had. This was the first time I talked to my supervisor on 8D. She offered me an interview the next day and I can’t express how grateful I am for that opportunity.
How was the Michigan Medicine recruiting fair different and/or better than any other work search experience you’ve had?
MP: The recruiting fair allowed me to have real, personal conversations with staff members from each unit. This helped me understand what each unit was looking for and what would best fit me and my career goals. They were very interested in learning a little something about each and every one of the attendees and gave us advice on how to move forward. Everyone I talked to truly wanted to see me succeed in my nursing career and find the best fit for me.
What do you love most about your job?
MP: I love the atmosphere, the coworkers, the patients, the complexity, and, most of all, the learning that happens on a daily basis. Everyone on my unit wants to help everyone grow as a nurse. Coming in as a new graduate, I was quite nervous, but within a few hours into my first shift I was able to connect with so many people and see how we all work together as a team. I can’t imagine starting my nursing career on any other unit or at any other organization.
Would you recommend job seekers attend the upcoming fair and why?
MP: Absolutely! It’s a great opportunity to learn more about each unit, the atmosphere they create and it can even land you your dream job. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I wouldn’t have gone to the recruiting fair. Be prepared and keep your mind open to the endless opportunities that Michigan Medicine has to offer.
