U-M United Way fundraising campaign honors bicentennial

The annual U-M United Way campaign is underway with a special bicentennial-themed goal of raising $1.817 million.

The goal was selected to honor U-M’s founding in 1817 and to inspire the U-M community to a higher level of support for the work the United Way and area agencies are doing in the community.

The campaign co-chairs — Cynthia H. Wilbanks, vice president of government relations, and Tony Denton, senior vice-president and COO of the U-M Health System — are asking their U-M colleagues to lend support for the community with a pledge to the campaign by Dec. 31.

“We want to inspire our U-M faculty, staff and retirees to do more this year through a pledge to the campaign. With increased support, there will be more programs and services for our neighbors in need and a stronger community,” Wilbanks said.

Every pledge can be designated to a nonprofit of one’s choice or may go toward the Community Investment Fund, which joins the United Way with local government and area foundations to ensure that all health and human service funding is directed toward the most pressing needs in the community, with services that are on target and proven to succeed.

“The campaign is an exciting opportunity for U-M employees to pool their resources and make an enormous impact on those in the community who need it the most,” Denton said. “Last year, the campaign raised more than $1.33 million.”

Making a pledge can be done either through the ePledge system on Wolverine Access — in the announcement section (upper right corner) of the faculty and staff page — or through a pledge form that is available at the U-M United Way website.

Contributors to this campaign will be entered automatically into a weekly prize drawing. A list of prizes is available at the U-M United Way website.

Those who give $1,000 or more become members of the Leadership Givers Association and will be invited to an annual reception hosted by U-M President Mark Schlissel.
