‘See something wrong … say something right’: The U-M Compliance Hotline
The University of Michigan, including Michigan Medicine, is committed to upholding the highest ethical standards by actively educating faculty and staff about compliance policies and ensuring that there is a process in place to report potential issues.
The Compliance Hotline is both a toll-free phone number (1-866-990-0111) and an online reporting tool. Workforce members can use the Hotline to report financial, regulatory, discrimination, employee safety and substance abuse/drug diversion concerns, NCAA violations, or anything that seems out of the ordinary or inconsistent with the university’s ethical standards.
The Hotline is staffed by a third-party vendor that provides:
- Independent, trained interview specialists
- The option of caller anonymity (if you do choose to report anonymously, please provide enough detail to allow for comprehensive review of your concern)
- 24/7 availability
- Multilingual staff
We encourage you to first try discussing your concerns with your manager or supervisor. However, if this has proven ineffective, or if you fear retaliation, you should report using the Hotline. UMHS Policy 01-04-005, Reporting Compliance Concerns, expressly prohibits retaliation against any workforce member who, in good faith, reports suspected compliance violations.
Situations involving an immediate emergency or imminent risk of harm should be reported via 9-1-1 (police or fire emergency) or 9-9-9 (employee or patient injury or emergency, security assistance).
For more information on reporting compliance concerns, please contact the Michigan Medicine Compliance Office at 734-615-4400 or visit the office’s website.
The Compliance Resource Center website also offers information about many compliance topics and identifies contacts who can answer compliance questions. You can also send questions via email to compliancecoordinator@umich.edu.
