We are pleased to announce that Sonya Miller, MD, the current associate program director of the PM&R physician residency program, has been appointed the interim program director of the residency program as of Monday, June 26, 2017. Dr. Miller received her MD from the University of Oklahoma. She completed her PM&R residency at the University of Michigan in 1998 where she served as chief resident. She joined the faculty at the University of Michigan in 1999 after a year in Texas. Dr. Miller has served as the associate program director since 1999. She completed the Michigan Educational Scholars Program, and has focused her research and teaching on education related to people with disabilities, including general attitudes about people with disabilities in health care. Her clinical work focuses on orthotics and prosthetics, wound care and geriatric care. We look forward to her leadership in the residency program during this transition period.

M. Catherine Spires, MD, will be stepping down as program director after 23 year of service (and two additional years as the assistant program director.) Dr. Spires is nationally known for her leadership in this role. The department will continue to benefit from her expertise as she focuses on her larger role as the Associate Chair for Education. We wish her much success in this new role, in which she will work to integrate the educational programs in PM&R and bring in innovative educational methods.
