Making a Difference: March 2017 highlights

April 19, 2017  //  FOUND IN: Our Employees,

Employees across Michigan Medicine continue to make a difference through their hard work and dedication. Recognizing the contributions employees make to the organization helps our team to become more motivated, drives better teamwork and gives each individual a sense that they are an integral part of achieving organizational goals.

Below are just a few examples of how faculty and staff helped Michigan Medicine provide exceptional patient care last month:

Peer Recognition

Steven Oatten, security officer, HHC Security Services

Officer Oatten’s quick and decisive actions helped save a child’s life. A parent arrived at the adult ER, frantic that his daughter was in the car and not breathing. Officer Oatten immediately ran to the car to get the child while medical staff was mobilizing their response. He proceeded to carry the girl into the resuscitation area, where medical staff was ready and waiting to administer care. Officer Oatten is deserving of recognition for his fast actions and his ability to help facilitate excellent patient care.

Susan Stephan, business analyst, MCIT

Susan’s project management work for two important projects has been invaluable. She is meticulous in making sure that both individual tasks and overall milestones are on track. She’s also ready and willing to use her extensive knowledge of data, reporting and analytics to jump in and help if anything is falling behind. Thank you, Susan, for your great work!

Alex Knoerr, nurse, Mott 11W Pediatric General Care

Recently, one of our patients coded on our unit. When I got to the patient’s room, I saw Alex giving the patient CPR. She continued to give the patient compressions until they both arrived at the ICU. I believe that Alex saved this little boy’s life. She has inspired me and I am honored to witness her hard work and the care she provides to her patients on a daily basis! This anonymous quote seems fitting: “Nurses are the next best thing to angels.”

I would like to recognize Janine, Allaina, Amber, Gail and Teddy for the assistance they have provided to multiple programs at Michigan Medicine. The group stepped up to fill staffing gaps and worked together to ensure that we were meeting the needs of our clients, programs and department. We all appreciate the help that your group has shown us. It has made our lives 100 percent easier and we’ve been able to tackle some major things that we just weren’t able to get to. Thank you!

Mary Stewart, contract and grant specialist, Department of Radiology

Mary just completed a very complicated progress report to the National Institutes of Health. There were so many extenuating circumstances and road blocks with this submission, but she demonstrated expertise, professionalism, decision-making abilities and grace throughout the process. Many thanks to her!

Patient to Staff

Sharman Madge, nurse, Central Staffing Resources

I would like to express my appreciation for the kindness and excellent care I received during my recent visit. I was going through a very difficult time emotionally. Sharman was very professional, calmed me down, explained everything, stayed with me until the end to be sure I understood what I was being told and I could make the right decisions. Thank you so much, Sharman!

Larry Carlton, ICU tech, 7B/C

I met Larry on September 16, 2016. He came into the room singing, cracking jokes and had me laughing in seconds. Every hospital needs people like Larry. He lifts your spirits up and, to me, that’s very important in one’s recovery. Before Larry leaves a room, he makes sure you have what you need. He works very hard and deserves to be recognized.

Liz McCloud, allied health supervisor, Pathology

Liz, you are an absolute miracle worker — the best, most skilled phlebotomist ever! I have terrible vein scarring and others struggle to find a viable vein, but you were successful on your first attempt both of the times you’ve treated me. And you are also so empathetic and sympathetic and just plain NICE. I cannot thank you enough!

Nancy Hardesty, registration specialist, Revenue Cycle

Nancy was an angel. We arrived exhausted from parking and in need of a wheelchair and directions. She provided both and took us to the 7th floor for admission, all on her lunch hour. Nancy took the time to make sure we got to our destination. She was terrific!
