Faculty, staff recognized for compliance with contact precautions policy

Congratulations to Michigan Medicine faculty and staff, who have done a tremendous job implementing a new policy regarding contact or droplet precautions in the inpatient setting.

Patients with specific infectious conditions are often placed in “droplet” or “contact precautions.” A patient with influenza, for instance, will be placed in droplet precautions — meaning faculty and staff must don personal protective equipment such as a gown, gloves, mask and eye protection upon entry to their room.

If a patient is deemed to need contact precautions, employees must wear a gown and gloves when entering their room.

The new policy — which went into effect in December — is consistent with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Recent monitoring showed that Michigan Medicine faculty and staff were overwhelmingly compliant with the guidelines.

Thank you to everyone in the organization who continues to work hard to ensure the safety of patients, families and colleagues!
