Daniel Fischer farewell

Dan Fischer, Interim Director of Social Work and the Director of Child and Family Life, Spiritual Care and Mott Community Relations, will soon be leaving the health system to join the faculty at the University of Michigan School of Social Work as Clinical Assistant Professor and Assistant Dean for Field Education. In this new position, Dan will lead the Office of Field Instruction which oversees internship training of all UMSSW graduate social work students, and collaborate with other Schools of Social Work and the Council on Social Work Education to develop future initiatives related to social work field education.

Dan joined the Health System in 1989 as a clinical social worker in the Department of Psychiatry, Child/Adolescent Outpatient Division. He became the Director of Graduate Social Work Education in 2001. Dan has also been an adjunct lecturer at the University of Michigan School of Social Work since 1993 and has demonstrated strong scholarship, publishing numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and abstracts, and presenting nationally on topics related to social work practice. In 2016 Dan was appointed to the initial cohort of the Interprofessional Education Leadership Fellows program.

In 2000, Dan became the supervisor in child/adolescent psychiatry. He was appointed the Chief of Social Work in Psychiatry in 2004 and in 2006, he began a new administrative role as the Director of the Child and Family Life Department at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. In 2010, Dan also became the Director of Mott Community Relations and in 2012 became the Director of Spiritual Care. In December of 2016, Dan became the Interim Director of the Department of Social Work at Michigan Medicine.
