Jason Lugtu landed his job at Michigan Medicine after attending the fall 2016 career fair.

Don’t forget, the spring nurse, advanced practice nurse and physician assistant career fair takes place on Sunday, March 19.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with hiring managers from departments across the organization, learn about available positions and start their journey down an exciting new career path.

That’s what happened to Jason Lugtu, BSN, who joined Michigan Medicine following the fall 2016 career fair. Jason now works in the Medical Short Stay Unit. Check out his story below:

Why did you choose nursing as a career path?

JL: I chose nursing as a career because I wanted to help care for people in a positive and meaningful way. Having previously served in both the military and as a law enforcement officer, I feel that I am most passionate about helping others and serving my community as a nursing professional.

What was your experience like at the fall 2016 career fair?

JL: I had a wonderful experience. A few of my colleagues from my previous employer decided to come to the fair just to take a look and see if U-M was really as great a place to work as everyone says. Now two of us work here and another is in the process of applying.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by event staff, given a nifty bag with cool U-M stuff, the chief nursing officer spoke to the attendees and there was an overwhelming number of units eager to meet potential new team members. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly and after the fair, I was followed up with immediately. Overall, the process was smooth and professional.

What do you love about your new job?

JL: The team of people that I work with, of course! I am blessed with caring supervisors and a great manager. I work with an excellent team of professionals and have made some new friends. We have a wonderful support staff and fantastic teamwork. Our staffing ratios are safe and appropriate and the pay, retirement, education and other benefits are great. I like being a part of a Magnet recognized health care system.

What has been the best part about your transition to Michigan Medicine?

JL: Everything about the transition has been very smooth. The hiring process, nursing orientation, additional training and classes, work scheduling and time off/vacation scheduling has all been super easy. I am very happy with my decision to come to U-M. Everyone from my nurse educator, supervisors, manager and my coworkers have made coming to U-M one of the smartest and best decisions of my career.

Would you recommend job seekers attend the spring recruiting fair and why?

JL: Absolutely! The recruitment fair is the best way to see what one of the best health care systems in the country has to offer you and your nursing career. Once you see the Michigan Medicine difference, you’ll want to be a part of this team!
