Help Michigan Medicine team earn spot in STAT Madness finals
A team of Michigan Medicine scientists and physicians is having a March to remember!
The team won its recent Elite 8 contest in STAT Madness, the first virtual tournament for medical science discoveries, created by the STAT News organization. Now, it needs your help to beat a team from MIT and advance to the final.
The U-M entry comes from a team led by Robert P. Dickson, M.D., a pulmonologist who studies the bacteria living in lungs. Last summer, he and colleagues published their discovery that bacteria from the gut could be found in the lungs of critically ill patients. Their research may lead to new treatments for patients in intensive care.
The Final Four matchup against MIT ends on Tuesday. If Michigan Medicine wins, the entry will face either the University of Pittsburgh or Cornell in the final round.
To vote, visit the STAT Madness website and choose a winner in each of the four matchups, then submit your bracket by entering your email address in the pop-up window. You’ll be notified when it’s time to make your choices in the next round of voting. The winner will be announced April 3.
Even as they compete in the tournament, Dickson and his colleagues haven’t stopped pursuing new knowledge about the lung microbiome. Read about their latest findings on the Michigan Health Lab.
