Special offer for faculty/staff as orchestra honors ‘Sounds of Change’

On the heels of last week’s symposium honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the University Musical Society invites you to explore the “Sounds of Change” even further.

Bruckner Orchester Linz — an orchestra from Linz, Austria — comes to U-M’s Hill Auditorium on Thursday, Feb. 2 to perform a unique concert featuring works by composers who wrote about the experience of Africans and African-Americans.

U-M faculty and staff, including anyone who works for Michigan Medicine, may purchase select main floor and mezzanine tickets for only $25.

In addition to Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess Suite and Duke Ellington’s Black, Brown, and Beige Suite, the program includes Alexander Zemlinsky’s Africa Sings, a 1929 work that features poetry by Langston Hughes and other prominent writers from the Harlem Renaissance.

Rounding out the program is the recent collaboration between composer Philip Glass and the wonderful West African singer Angélique Kidjo. The work is based on three poems of Ifé, an ancient Yoruban city that is regarded as the spiritual heartland of the Yoruba people living in Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, as well as the birthplace of some of the highest achievements in African art and culture.
