If you have prediabetes, you can cut your risk of developing type 2 diabetes in half by losing 5 to 7 percent of your body weight. That is about 10 to 14 pounds for a person weighing 200 pounds.

Fortunately, it’s not too late to register for the U-M Diabetes Prevention Program, which begins next Wednesday, Jan. 11.

In this program, participants work in a group with a registered dietitian to learn the skills needed to lose weight, become more physically active and manage stress. The program is certified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is proven to prevent or delay onset of type 2 diabetes.

Fees and Eligibility

The program is a covered benefit for eligible members of BCN U-M Premier Care. For all other insurance plans, an out-of-pocket fee will apply. You are eligible if you meet both of these requirements:

  • Lab results showing A1C of 5.7-6.4% in the last year.
  • BMI of 24 or higher (22 or higher if Asian)

The Winter 2017 class will meet at the following times and location:

  • When: Wednesdays, 6 p.m.- 7 p.m., beginning Jan. 11
  • Where: Turner Senior Resource Center, 2401 Plymouth Rd, Ann Arbor

Groups meet for a year — weekly for the first 6 months, then once or twice a month for the remaining 6 months.

To learn more about the program and to sign up, call 734-998-2475 and select option 1.
