Making a difference: November 2016 highlights
Employees across UMHS continue to make a difference through their hard work and dedication. Recognizing the contributions employees make to UMHS helps our team to become more motivated, drives better teamwork, and gives each individual a sense that they are an integral part of achieving our organizational goals.
You may not always realize the impact you make during each customer interaction (both internal and external), but it’s a vital part of the relationship-building process that the UMHS team uses to engage with patients and each other. Here are a few examples of team members who made a difference last month:
Staff to Staff
Jill Coros, physical therapist, and Doretta May, occupational therapist – Home Care Services
Jill and Doretta went above and beyond recently! We had a client that had a dog that was so neglected, the hair was so matted from head to tail one could not see its eyes and mouth. You both made a difference by hiring a traveling dog groomer to go to the client’s home and groom the animal. You made a difference to not only the family’s life that couldn’t afford to have the dog groomed, but also the dog’s life who was suffering physically due to unintentional neglect. You both show why Michigan is the best of the best and are an example for everyone!
Kathy Szakatis, nurse practitioner – Palliative Care Program
Kathy, you make a difference the moment you walk into a patient’s room or set foot on the unit. It is a pleasure working with you and learning from you about providing palliative care to our patients and families. You are always asking what PALL can do to make things better and you are always in communication with the nursing staff, patients and their families. YOU make a difference. Thank you!
Family to Staff
Respiratory Care Team (12 E) – Respiratory Care
My daughter stayed on 12E for two weeks and had intense respiratory treatment every two hours for a week. The hard work put into her care by everyone on the team was amazing. Dedicated and caring is the only way to describe them. They all contributed to my daughter getting better! They work so well together and even inspired her to look into being a respiratory therapist herself! My thanks can’t begin to explain the way I feel about this entire team. They were a huge part in her turning that corner to getting better. You all deserve the world — thank you!
Fatima Malik, nurse aide, 8C – General Surgery
It’s people like Fatima who make a difference between someone just doing their job and someone who truly cares! Your kindness to my father did not go unnoticed. We have had many hospital stays in our family and very few personnel show attentiveness and a great personality like you. I could never ask for anyone better to care for my father. You are going to make a great RN because you are a great person on the inside and show it well on the outside. You are what makes a hospital great. You are a shining star — never get dull! We are so sincerely thankful for your caring heart — thank you so much!
