Talk Turkey this Thanksgiving

While no one likes to think of becoming very sick or injured, our work here at UMHS shows us that these situations happen every day. Because life is unpredictable, everyone should consider their values and preferences and designate a Patient Advocate. Your Patient Advocate is the person you select who would be responsible for making decisions related to your care if you were to become very sick or injured and were not able to speak for yourself. This person should be someone you trust to make decisions that reflect your own health care preferences.

During the week of Thanksgiving, you’ll see “Talk Turkey” tables set up in the UH Café. Talk Turkey is part of an effort within UMHS to encourage all patients, faculty and staff to designate a Patient Advocate, and to talk with this person about what you would want to have happen if you are unable to speak for yourself. 

Talk Turkey volunteers will be distributing the Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare forms, as well as a guide to talking with your Patient Advocate (and other loved ones) about what you would — or would not — want regarding end-of-life care.

Visit the Talk Turkey table next week and pick up more information — if not for you, then for a loved one. Volunteers will be available to provide information and answer questions on Monday, Nov. 21 and Tuesday, Nov. 22 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
