Teach-Back: What does your patient really understand?
Many leading health care organizations, such as the American College of Physicians, American Medical Association and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, mandate the use of “Teach-Back” to ensure patients understand medication schedules, self-care instructions and the risks and benefits of therapies. Research has shown that utilizing the Teach-Back technique raises patient satisfaction, increases trust in health care providers and helps patients feel more relaxed.
The Patient Education Center is providing in-service sessions to help clinicians master the skills and strategies of Teach-Back.
The sessions are available by request to all units and areas that request it. To kick-off the program, all health system clinicians are invited to a brown bag presentation on Thursday, Oct. 6 from noon-1 p.m. at the Danto Auditorium. The brown bag will feature the comprehensive version of the training program which is about 45 minutes long and includes a video, a presentation and a learning activity. It is possible to request shorter in-services, tailored to faculty or staff needs. For instance, 15- or 30-minute long programs are available.
