‘Nurse’ your career: Attend October recruiting fair
Don’t forget, the UMHS fall Nurse Recruiting Fair takes place on Sunday, Oct. 9. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet hiring managers from many hospital departments, learn about available positions and start their journey on an exciting new career path.
That’s what happened to UMH 4D Neuro ICU RN Moriah Hovey, who landed her job shortly after attending the recent spring recruiting fair. Check out her story below.
Why did you choose nursing as a career path?
MH: I chose nursing as a career path because I wanted to put my skills and abilities to use while being able to help people in such a real way. I am fascinated by the science behind this career, the wonders of the human anatomy and the innovation that occurs every single day. When I joined the nursing field, I realized that there were so many physical ways that I could aid people and assist in their healing.
What was your experience at the UMHS Nurse Recruiting Fair?
MH: I spoke to one of the recruiters (Bill Moren) when I arrived and he helped me to scope out which units would be my priority during the fair. It was so helpful to have some direction right from the start. I spoke to many managers and supervisors at the nursing career fair. Surprisingly, I hit it off with more than one of them. Not only did they make me feel comfortable, they made me feel like I could be a strong asset on their unit.
How was the UMHS Nurse Recruiting Fair different and/or better than any other work search experience you’ve had?
MH: I was able to have real conversations with the men and women who represented each unit. They even gave me tools and ideas for how to progress in my career. They asked important questions centered around my life goals. I felt like I could be an important part of their team and they could serve as pivotal aspects of my career. One of the managers said to me, “This is the perfect event to get to know our new staff before they’re even hired!”
What do you love about your job?
MH: My job makes me a better person every single day. My coworkers assist me in growing and learning. I work with an exceptional group of people. Each and every one of them is striving to provide the absolute finest care to the patients and families. I feel like my voice is heard and I am respected among my peers (even as a new grad!). It doesn’t feel like a hierarchy; we are a team. I feel a great sense of autonomy in this line of work and I can design my shift around the needs of the patient. My entire life perspective has improved because of the patient population and health care professionals on my unit.
Would you recommend job seekers attend this fair and why?
MH: I would absolutely recommend job seekers attend this career fair! I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t attended the spring career fair. I’m so grateful that management saw potential in me on that day and everything fell into place. It felt like my hard work finally paid off and my dream of being an ICU nurse was closer than ever! (Who knew that my five-year-plan would come three years early?!)
