Communicating electronically with patients outside the patient portal

As an organization, UMHS continues to look for ways to provide the highest quality of care to our patients. In fact, one of the health system’s priorities is to enhance the ideal patient experience. This begins with communication.

Secure electronic communication can play an important role in improving patient access to health care providers. It also helps patients who want to be better informed and more active in their treatment plan.

The recommended method to communicate electronically with patients is via the patient portal. The patient portal provides a way to exchange secure messages that are always available to patients and are automatically documented in the patient record. Providers actively encouraging portal enrollment and use increases the number of portal users.

For times when portal use is not accessible, the organization has created guidelines to help clinicians determine what safeguards are necessary when communicating electronically with patients. Click here to read those guidelines, which have been endorsed by the UMMG Clinical Practice Committee
