New graduate course series: Scientific Methods for Health Sciences

UMHS faculty have developed and implemented a new and innovative graduate methods and analytics course series, Scientific Methods for Health Sciences (SMHS): HS851, HS852, HS853. These Rackham-approved courses will be offered in a sequence, Fall 2016, Winter 2017, Fall 2017, respectively. The three courses (four credit hours each) cover modern techniques, utilize open-source software, and employ powerful case studies to demonstrate Big Data management, applied inference methods, develop skills for handling, harmonizing, aggregating, processing, analyzing and interpreting model-based (e.g., GLM) and model-free (e.g., unsupervised machine learning) methods. The courses emphasize scientific formulation, analytical modeling, computational tools, and applied statistical inference in diverse health-sciences challenges using real biomedical case-studies.

Students will learn how to use advanced statistical methods, conduct statistical calculations/analyses on complex, incongruent and multi-source data, analyze specific biomedical case studies, communicate modern statistical concepts and techniques, and build a comprehensive tool chest of end-to-end computational solutions applicable to many health care challenges.
