A U-M radiology professor has been named to a panel that provides independent guidance and advice to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Ella Kazerooni, M.D., M.S., is director of the cardiothoracic radiology division and associate chair for clinical affairs. Kazerooni and her colleagues on the Medicare Evidence Development & Coverage Advisory Committee (MEDCAC) panel will review and evaluate medical literature and review technology assessments. The panel will also provide public testimony and examine data and information on the benefits, harms and appropriateness of medical items and services that are or may be eligible to be covered under Medicare.

MEDCAC members come from a wide variety of medical specialties and Dr. Kazerooni is eager to help represent radiology.

“Imaging is an essential service,” Dr. Kazerooni said. “Increasing awareness of what we do, the research and quality behind it, is ultimately good for patient care.”
