Making a difference: February 2016 highlights

March 24, 2016  //  FOUND IN: Our Employees,

Employees across UMHS continue to make a difference through their hard work and dedication.  Recognizing the contributions employees make to UMHS helps our team to become more motivated, drives better teamwork, and gives each individual a sense that they are an integral part of achieving organizational goals.

You may not always realize the impact you make during each customer interaction (both internal and external, but it’s a vital part of the relationship-building process that the UMHS team uses to engage with patients and each other. Here are a few examples of team members who made a difference last month:

Peer Recognition

Christa Oleszkowicz, patient services associate, Otolaryngology

“There was a surgery yesterday that required a model for the surgeon to use while in the OR. While models usually make it here before the surgery date, there was a delivery issue with this particular model. (Christa) went above and beyond going all the way to the airport, tracking down the flight, and waiting until the model arrived. She got the model and came back to the hospital at the break of dawn to make sure it was sterilized properly and ready in time for the surgery. (Christa) always goes out of her way in grand measures to make sure her patients are taken care of and receive the best possible care. Her work ethic is outright admirable!”

Josh Coggins, senior web designer, Department of Communication

“I won’t pretend to understand exactly how Josh does what he does; It involves coding and websites and a lot of ones and zeroes and stuff I don’t know how to do. But I do know his work is important and essential when it comes to integrating creative from one platform to another. For a C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital Valentine’s Day campaign, Josh helped implement a socially-based creative campaign, customizing our unique look and feel on an existing social tool, while also helping to make it work on the web. What started as a cool idea, following implementation, caught on like crazy, and within 24 hours, more than 3,300 valentine’s wishes had been captured. Josh’s expertise helped maintain the amazing look of the campaign, made it easy for participants to use, and he smiled the entire time!”

Kim Roe, interventional radiology technician, Radiology

“Recently, I was on call and getting our angio suite ready for an emergent stroke patient who would be on the table within minutes of when we received the call that they were on their way. We had two emergencies that day, but only enough staff to handle one at a time.  We called Kim to see if she would be willing to come in and assist. She had just been seated with her family at a restaurant when she received that call and said she would get here as soon as possible. Kim arrived and prepared our second suite for the second stroke patient whoa arrived shortly after. Because of Kim’s dedication to her team and to a patient who was in a life threatening situation, both patients received the same level of care as a single stroke patient would receive and also in the critical timeframe needed to make a difference in their outcome. Kim is a dedicated team member who serves as an example to all of us.”

Patient Recognition

Brighton Health Center (group recognition)

“I would like to compliment Dr. Borgeson (internal medicine instructor) and his entire staff for the excellent medical treatment given to both of my aging parents, as well as the family assistance given to me in helping to care for them both. Dr. Borgeson and his staff have listened intentionally to the various concerns surrounding my parents’ health over the past 14 months and made the necessary adjustments that have greatly improved their medical conditions. The genuine medical care and concerns being addressed in such a timely matter has exceeded past medical experiences. I have recommended Dr. Borgeson to family, friends, and other medical personnel within Livingston County!”

Travis Pierce, registered nurse, C & W Emergency Services

“Travis was my daughter Megan’s nurse during her admission for a severe four-day migraine. He was great with her and explained what he was doing and was even able to get a few smiles out of her. He was knowledgeable, efficient and above all, compassionate. As a nurse myself, I know how difficult it can be to provide top-notch care when the unit is busy, but Travis did it. He took care of not only Megan, but me as well. I can’t be complimentary enough. He is a great nurse! Our experience was positive from the time I handed my keys to the valet and was checked in by the triage staff to the time we checked out and got back to valet. It hadn’t been my plan to visit the emergency room but Travis and the other staff members we encountered made it the best it could be.”

Nicole Divo, security officer, HHC Security Services

“My mother left the hospital after surgery and left her bag containing valuables and a cell phone in a public area. She was very upset after a long drive home and a long day at the hospital to find she didn’t have her belongings. I called the hospital and was transferred to Ms. Divo. She was very reassuring in telling us that she would carefully look for the belongings and call me back. Because UM is such a large hospital, I wasn’t confident that security would actually look for my mother’s purse – and if found, return it to me. I was so happy when Ms. Divo called back very quickly saying she had my mother’s bag and she would hold it at the security desk. She told me how to easily park and to let valet know I had to make a quick stop at security so that I didn’t have to pay for parking. My mother was so relieved and was able to sleep peacefully getting the rest she needed to recover from her procedure. It might seem like a small event in someone’s day, but it was a big deal to me and my mother. Ms. Divo would not accept a reward, even a small token of appreciation. Her honesty and kindness should be recognized and acknowledged by her colleagues!
