Notice of Availability of Funds
*Special RFA* Request for Applications Addressing Melanoma Research
Melanoma Research Grant, Allen H. Blondy Research Fellowship for Melanoma
Cutaneous Oncology Program is pleased to announce the availability of funds to support two research proposals aimed at advancing basic, translational, or clinical research on melanoma. Priority will be given to projects deemed likely to be competitive for major NIH support in the future, but all applicants with compelling projects are encouraged to apply. Eligible applicants include faculty in either the Instructional or Clinical Tracks, or the Research Track at the level of Assistant Research Professor or higher. Scientific merit of the proposals will be assessed by the UMCCC Cancer Research Committee, and final award decisions will be made based on committee recommendations and program priorities. The duration of each project will be one year, with a budget of $50,000 that can be used for personnel, supplies, or other justifiable costs.
Amount: The total amount is $50,000.
Deadline for applications is May 5, 2016
Please submit the following:
- Application – (5-page max with legible figures) and items
- Four-page NIH biosketch of principal investigator and co-investigator(s)
- NIH other support pages of principal investigator
- Supporting letters from all consultants/co-investigators documenting their involvement and commitment of effort and resources
- UCUCA and/or IRB approval (if applicable)
- Appendix, if applicable, which should not include figures
INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL BE RETURNED.

Please note that DRDA provides an excellent reference on grant preparation application entitled “Proposal Writer’s Guide.” Applicants are advised that grantsmanship will factor into the final score of the application.
Other Cancer Research Committee Funds Available:
Research Grants are available for an investigator for his/her cancer-related research, or for any interesting and innovative collaboration between scientists. The fund is available for faculty in any unit of the University. The funds may not be used for salary support for persons holding a Ph.D. or M.D. degree. The total amount requested must not exceed $50,000.
Idea Grants are available for an investigator who has a novel and innovative idea for cancer research. Preliminary data to support the feasibility of the proposed studies are not required. However, preliminary data may be helpful in assessing the merits of the application and applicants are encouraged to include preliminary data if they are available. The funds may not be used for salary support for persons holding a Ph.D. or M.D. degree. Funding for the IDEA grants will not exceed $35,000. Recipients of IDEA grants will be encouraged to apply subsequently for the Research Grants.
Deadline for electronic submission of funding opportunities is midnight, the first Thursday of each month, Sept – June.
Grants may not be reviewed in a given month if too few are received.
The Committee welcomes any proposal that will strengthen the position of the University in cancer research, particularly if it represents an interdisciplinary approach to the cancer problem. The chair of the Committee would be happy to discuss any such ideas with a faculty member.
