Reselling or Recycling Electronic Media? Learn safe tips
A common cause of large breaches of PHI is improper disposal of electronic devices or media that were once used for storage.
Devices include but are not limited to:
- Desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, USB flash drives, external hard drives, digital camera memory cards, CDs, DVDs, optical disks, copy machines, faxes, scanners, etc.
A common misconception is that deleting files on a device completely removes them from the device. This is NOT true. Files that are deleted or moved to a workstation’s recycle bin/trashcan may be easily recovered using free file recovery software.
If you are disposing of electronic media that has ever stored sensitive data, it must be properly removed before selling, recycling or being reused. If the device is no longer functional it must be physically destroyed to ensure the security of the data.
