A message from Tom Peterson, associate director of Operations and Support Services, UMHHC

Safety at the U-M Health System is paramount. Every day we strive to improve the health and protect the well-being of our patients and visitors. It is with this commitment in mind that we ask you to consider the safety of those who come to us for care, as well as your fellow faculty and staff members, during your morning commute.

There have been a number of recent safety complaints and incidents regarding staff driving at UMHHC parking structures, particularly at the P4 (Children’s and Women’s Hospital) Structure. Please remember to abide by all traffic laws and take extra precaution while searching for available parking spaces.

Here are some helpful safety tips to keep in mind when approaching any UMHS parking structure:

  • Drive carefully and be attentive to pedestrians and other vehicles.
  • Follow directional traffic signs to decrease the chance of an accident.
  • Be courteous to others who are also searching for open spaces.
  • Remember that P4 is a shared structure. There are many patients and visitors who are also trying to park and walk through the structure safely.

The Mott (P4) Structure typically fills by 6:30 a.m. If you arrive after this time, please consider alternative parking options. Please do not queue-up and wait for parking spaces to become vacant as this causes traffic backups and contributes to unsafe conditions.

If you are a Blue Permit parker and arrive to the P4 structure after 6:30 a.m., please consider these alternatives:

  • Ann Street Structure: Average fill-time 7:30 a.m.
  • Catherine Street structure: Average fill-time 7:45 a.m.
  • Glen Avenue Structure: Average fill-time 8:30 a.m.
  • Palmer Drive Structure: Average fill-time 9:10 a.m.
  • Wall Street Parking Structure: This structure never fills and has bus service to UMHHC every11 minutes. The ride to our hospitals is five minutes or less.

Thank you for helping to protect the safety of our visitors, patients, faculty and staff as you commute to and park at our facilities.

Sincerely,

Tom Peterson
Associate Director of Operations and Support Services, UMHHC
